One of the things I always wanted to accomplish in life was earning a college degree. I tried many times before, but it just didn’t work out. Then, at 47 years old, I finally decided to give it another shot. That’s when all the insecurities started knocking on my door like uninvited guests.
First of all, English is my second language. I started learning it as an adult, and I never took a proper conversational class before college. So yes — I have an accent. Some people find it exotic, others find it confusing, and let’s be honest, a few probably find it annoying. But hey, it’s part of my charm!
Then came the age thing. I was about to take classes with students who could easily be my kids… or even my grandkids. I wondered, Are they going to like me? Are they going to make fun of my accent? Am I the dinosaur in the classroom? (Spoiler alert: yes, but a cool one.)
The first day, I walked in with my backpack feeling a little nervous. But as soon as class started, I felt it — I was exactly where I was meant to be. I grew not just academically, but as a person. I even started to love the energy and kindness of the students around me.
Now, when it comes to grades, I don’t play. A’s were my goal, B’s were fine, and C’s? Absolutely not! I worked hard, and every semester, I made the Dean’s List with honors.
The journey wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either. I’m so proud I did it. I might have been the dinosaur in the classroom, but learning has no age limit — and dreams don’t come with expiration dates.
So if you’re thinking it’s “too late” to start something, let me tell you: it’s never too late to surprise yourself. Just grab your backpack, your courage, and maybe a little coffee… and go for it.
