I Diagnose My Friends

You know that moment when your friend starts talking about her ex, and halfway through you’re thinking, “This woman has lost her mind”? And before you know it, you’re secretly diagnosing her, her ex, his mother, and everyone else who gets mentioned? Yeah, we’ve all been there.

From bipolar to depression, and the all-time favorite word narcissist, we toss around mental health labels like confetti. You’ve probably heard it too: “Girl, remember Junior, the psychopath who dated Dani?” or “My mom’s a narcissist, she’s always the victim!”

I’ll admit it, I used to do that too. I diagnosed coworkers, in-laws, and probably the mailman. Then I actually studied mental health and learned that making a real diagnosis is a serious responsibility, and no, not everyone is a narcissist.

So let’s laugh at our inner psychologist. How many people have you diagnosed in your head and why? Share your story at jessicablueblanket@gmail.com. I’d love to hear it!

Because sometimes the best therapy is just admitting, “Hi, I’m Catalina, and I diagnose people for fun.”
